Here is a case study of an effective investment in electric vehicle infrastructure.
First Bus, one of the largest bus operators in the UK, serves the Greater Glasgow area and Aberdeen in Scotland. Committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2035, the company has made significant investments in electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure.
First Bus launched a pilot project at its Caledonia Depot in Glasgow, resulting in the creation of the UK’s largest EV charging station featuring over 150 ultra-rapid chargers delivering up to 150kW simultaneously due to the on-site substation.
They have also implemented a shared-use model in order to optimise the usage of their charging infrastructure. As the bus fleet recharges overnight, the chargers are made available for local businesses and community members during the day. This approach ensures the charge points are getting used and supports EV users in the local area.
Early trials with logistics companies, such as DPD and Openreach, helped refine key processes, including vehicle registration, site navigation, and customer support.
Businesses first register their vehicles for activation, and new users receive a walkthrough of site facilities and safety protocols upon arrival. Safety rules and site guidance are clearly signposted and marked in multiple locations.
Shared charging is available during the following hours:
Users can pay via an RFID card issued upon registration, or through contactless payment. There is also a dedicated rest area which provides a comfortable space for drivers to use while their vehicles charge. The depot’s location—opposite a retail park— also offers access to cafes and other amenities.
Encouraged by the success of its B2B trials, First Bus is preparing to extend its charging services to individual consumers (B2C).
To improve the user experience, the company has introduced instructional videos on how to use the chargers, as well as customised billing and financial reporting options for B2B clients.
Through strategic innovation and collaboration, First Bus is setting a new standard for EV infrastructure, supporting both corporate fleets and local communities in the transition to sustainable transport.
